Self-Reflection- Memo

Writing is not an easy task, the more I learn about the different types of writing there are I realize that each piece has its own purpose. This memo was one of the first I’ve ever done, at first it was not easy as I didn’t really realize how much was really structured in a memo. I thought that you just write your concerns, yet the more we learned I realized that this has a structure as well. As I wrote my memo one thing that I found difficult is first picking a topic. I realized that the problems that we face every day in our day to day school life are what would be the topic of this memo.

As I thought more about this topic one problem I believe I had was that in reality, I may have been a bit to close to the topic. This is something that I find happens a lot in the work I do. I can try to be unbiased or more organized with my thoughts, but I find myself writing on and on without thinking of how it sounds. Which makes my writing seem all over the place as I sometimes go off on tangents. Later when I go into rereading it I find that many of the sentences don’t make sense, I’m once again stuck where I first started. At this point, I don’t know what to do as I go into a type of writer’s block on how to fix these sentences into one cohesive memo.

One problem I did realize after the peer review of my memo was that I used a lot of jargon. I realized that when I did reread it I would understand but didn’t take into consideration what my audience could understand. The jargon used was something I understood but when it was brought up I started to see how much I use it in the day to day life, as well as how many times I must explain my use of certain words, jargon, and how I’ve had to explain it. After this assignment, I became more aware of how much my writing is almost an exact replica of how I speak. I believe that this is good, but like everything, it has a time and place to use it. Considering this, that is one of my problems when it comes to writing. Its either having too much of my speech in it or just a fragmented piece of writing with all my thoughts and unorganized. They say architects, sketch and are so messy is because our minds work and think a mile a minute. I don’t find wrong in those but I do believe that it as in everything it needs to be organized and have a flow so that everyone is able to understand what I’m trying to convey.
