Self-Reflection
Technical Description
Technical Descriptions despite the time given takes a lot of time and research. It allows one to understand a product even more in-depth than just the surface. One of my main goals with the learning objectives that I was trying to better at was “strategies for reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment”. This brings along the idea of planning and organizing ahead of time the information and ideas in the paper. While researching there came a point where I lost focus on what I was truly looking for. It seemed as I was more worried in trying to find a good way to combine all this information rather than trying to actually find good information.
As I started to write out all the information I had I tried to think ahead of time where this information would be placed in the report. Since organizing my thoughts was something I’ve tried to improve I thought that it would help if I knew where everything went ahead of time. The more I did this the more time I was trying to make the information understandable. Many times, I had information that was not relevant to the object I had chosen, a knife, it was more in line with the other developments of the OLFA company which produces it. Yet I tried to make it fit into the description as it was part of the background information I thought might be helpful or relevant. The organization of this paper was one of my highest concerns. The delivery of the information was the most difficult, the way that I think it reads many times doesn’t sound or deliver the same to others. As I started my introduction of the paper I tried to get straight to the point. I tend to over word my introductions which is something that I tried to keep in mind when I was writing it and rereading it. After writing my first draft of my introduction I asked myself, is this the information and context my audience needs to understand? After this question, it came to me that the information was not entirely information, but more of my thoughts on the product and a rephrasing of it. I looked more into the what my next point would be in my organization and see if there can be a connection and bending of both. The history of the OLFA company was the context that my audience would need, so why not that be introduced. From there went the description of the object itself.
This part wasn’t as difficult, the most difficult part of this OLFA knife was trying to figure out which part was really the most important to the overall object. It all depended on which way it was looked at it, but in the end, I realized they all need the same level of importance, since they need each other to work. One of my dilemmas was the transition from one part to another. Since each part was dependent or connected to another it made it difficult to discuss one without the mention of the others. How I tried to separate them was I made a list of each component. From there I moved to write their uses as well as their importance to overall knife. From there it gave me something to work from. The overall description was something that could have been more detailed, but I struggled with the level of detail does a description of a small part need. Too much information can become too redundant as well as bore the reader. All of these came into mind while I was writing.
At the end, after revising everything I still have the tendency to not realize the reader does not have the same background information and research as I do. I found that some parts were very broad statements and information. I had to go in and try to insert more to make it understandable. But the doubt that those parts were over detailed became something that I was worried about. Apart from these, the formatting of the whole paper is something that I still had trouble with. The addition of the headers was something that I had forgotten in the first draft, but also, I had trouble with the referencing of the sources. All of these need a lot more revision in my point of view. Which I still must worry more about, this is one of my downfalls when it comes to writing. Despite the editing of the paper itself, I must improve the structure and formatting. The overall organization of my thoughts has gotten better, but the general writing needs more than just 2 revisions, I think I must take more time to revise and edit more of the paper with time in-between to have a new look on the whole entire paper.
